After key stints with Silver Jews and Lambchop, William Tyler has released a series of curious albums that combine his rural origins and enthusiasm for classical music with his love of experimentation and field recordings. His prolific enclave of instrumental music has produced not only new sounds, but critical new voices. No other American solo guitarist of this century has influenced this fertile scene quite like him.
And on the brilliant, refreshing "Time Indefinite", Tyler's first solo album in five years, he finally enters the ever-expanding space he helped create. The guitar is the starting point for an album that not only rethinks Tyler, but also the possibilities of an entire field. A maelstrom of noise and harmony, ghosts and dreams, fear and hope - it's not just a great guitar record.
It's a breathtaking album by a great guitarist, a masterpiece of our collectively anxious times. In early 2020, with the world on the brink of unprecedented turmoil, Tyler left LA and moved to Nashville, where he had lived most of his life, leaving behind most of his equipment and all of his records in anticipation of what he thought would be a quick return. Of course, that wasn't the case. So while Tyler struggled with the depression, nerves and questions of this endlessly tense time, he began recording ideas with his phone and a cassette deck, coming to terms with the distortions these devices bring.
