Drummer Chico Hamilton has met many top young musicians in his years as a bandleader, but it is less well known that Larry Coryell made his recording debut with his solid and smooth soul-jazz performance, lending a bluesy touch to "The Dealer". In addition to mainly originals from Chico Hamilton's pen, the spirited boogaloo "For Mods Only", composed by free jazz saxophonist Archie Shepp, who also plays piano on the track, deserves special mention.
