Although Thad Jones made a name for himself with Count Basie's orchestra in 1956 when he recorded his debut album for Blue Note, his brilliant and original trumpet style only really came into its own in the small group. With his colleagues from Detroit, Billy Mitchell and Barry Harris, as well as musicians Percy Heath and Max Roach, he plays brilliant and inventive arrangements for most of the standards. Two bonus tracks have been added, including a beautiful duet with Kenny Burrell.
