Pianist Horace Parlan had gained notoriety in the late 1950s through recordings with Charles Mingus' Workshop Band ("Mingus Ah Um" and "Blues & Roots"). in 1960, he began a brief but highly productive liaison with Blue Note Records.
In just 16 months, he recorded six hardbop classics for the label. A special gem is "Speakin' My Piece," recorded in July 1960 with tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and his brother Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, bassist George Tucker and drummer Al Harewood.
