"Some of it sounds so pure and clear, and I imagine him squeezing around all that equipment, just magical. My recollection is that he wasn't playing 'for' the audience, but rather trying to perfect these different permutations of sound within himself... and a few of us just happened to be there." - Tom Lee "Open Vocal Phrases, Where Songs Come In And Out & Sketches For World of Echo" features two intimate, unedited Arthur Russell solo live performances recorded at Phill Niblock's Experimental Intermedia Foundation in downtown NYC on 12/20/1985 and 6/25/84.
Phill curated and produced both concerts at EI with Arthur, which would become part of the basis for the album World of Echo. Arthur called the performances "Sketches for World of Echo" (released on cassette/DL in 2020) and "Open Vocal Phrases, Where Songs Come in and Out". These extraordinary performances were recorded 18 months apart between 1984/85 by Steve Cellum and supervised by Phill and Arthur. Arthur later edited excerpts from both concerts and merged them with studio material recorded at Battery Sound to complete the album World of Echo, released in 1986.
The recordings are released as a double CD in a digipack with color insert and liner notes. The CD set contains the complete Sketches performance. The double vinyl LP contains the complete nineteen-minute "plus version" of "Tower of Meaning/Rabbit's Ear/Home Away" as well as the previously unreleased songs 'That's The Very Reason" and "Too Early to Tell".
