Washed Out's music has always created a kind of timeless limbo, with haunting, amorphous vocals, expansive soundscapes and wistful narratives.
In 2021, Ernest Greene, the creative force behind Washed Out, left the city of Atlanta to return to the rural area where he grew up. Where escapism once flooded his thoughts, he is now preoccupied with the universe of wonder in the reality around him. He has named the former horse farm he moved to "Endymion" (after the pastoral poem by John Keats about a heartbroken shepherd, the first line of which reads: "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever"). It has shaped everything he has created there, from his music to the creative direction of the album and his planned large-scale experiments in the visual arts.
It is this purity of vision that makes "Notes From a Quiet Life" so effective. It is the first album Greene has produced entirely on his own, with assistance from Nathan Boddy (James Blake, Mura Masa) and David Wrench (Caribou, Florence + the Machine).
