"Movements of Air" is the highly anticipated fifth album from the acclaimed trio of Daniel Herskedal with Eyolf Dale on piano and Helge Andreas Norbakken on drums and percussion. This album, which marks his tenth notable release on Edition Records, follows on seamlessly from his landmark trio debut "Slow Eastbound Train" and earlier masterpieces such as "The Roc" and "Voyage".
Over the past decade, Daniel Herskedal has pushed the boundaries of the tuba further and further, creating music that is both deeply introspective and expansive and cinematic. At its core, "Movements of Air" explores themes of hope, the pursuit of a better future and the nature of musical creation itself. With masterful performances by all members and intricate compositions, Herskedal navigates the delicate balance between good and evil, war and peace. Pieces like "The Olive Branch" and "Peace River Crossing" showcase his ability to create emotionally resonant soundscapes, while pieces like "Elements of Harmony" and "Harmonic Allusions" highlight his innovative approach to harmony and texture.
This album is a testament to Herskedal's extraordinary talent for pushing the traditional boundaries of his instrument and creating music that is both emotionally compelling and artistically groundbreaking.
Daniel Herskedal's exceptional performances highlight his artistic ability and versatility. His remarkable arrangement of "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" for the 2019 Brad Pitt-produced film "The Last Black Man in San Francisco" was later used in Coca Cola's "Open Like Never Before" global advertising campaign. His extensive collaborations include performances with renowned ensembles such as the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Royal Norwegian Navy Band and the Choir of the Russian Patriarchate in Moscow. His joint project with Marja Mortensson was awarded the Norwegian Grammy in 2019, and in 2021 he secured the Ambies Award for Best Original Music and Music Supervision for the podcast "9/12". In addition, his work with artists such as Keaton Henson and Emilie Nicolas on their album "Out of the Fog" underlines his versatility and collaborative spirit.
