Jazz singer Mel Tormé, who was not only popular but also admired by many colleagues, was called "The Velvet Fog" because of his fascinating voice. He was world-class both as a sensitive crooner and with breathtaking scat improvisations. On his debut album for Verve, recorded in 1958, he alternates beautifully between one side and the other, supported by arrangements by the legendary West Coast musician Marty Paich.
