You certainly can't accuse DeWolff of lacking inspiration. After all, the power trio from Glehn in the Netherlands are releasing their ninth album in just 14 years with "Love, Death & In Between".
A visit by frontman Pablo van de Poel to a church service by the preaching soul singer Al Green is regarded as the initial spark for the new album. After this experience, he and his bandmates immersed themselves in countless R'n'B and soul classics from America, from Sam Cooke and Ray Charles to The Staple Singers.
It is only logical that DeWolff have now added the warm, driving pulse of retro soul to their already very tradition-conscious sound mix of blues and psych-rock on "Love, Death & In Between". The pre-released singles "Night Train" and "Heart Stopping Kinda Show" prove just how well this new sound suits the Dutch band.
For the recordings, the three went to a small studio in Brittany with some friends. There, the twelve new songs were recorded live and without overdubs. Completely analog, of course, and on original equipment from the 1940s to 1970s. The authentic, warm sound of "Love, Death & In Between" is the well-deserved reward for this approach.
With their new album, DeWolff definitely deliver a highlight of their career to date. The band is perfectly rehearsed and has successfully captured their live energy on tape in the studio.
