Mudvayne was an American metal band from Illinois that was founded in 1996. The band became known for their extremely visual appearance, for which they used horror movie-like make-up. The band has sold over six million records worldwide, almost three million of them in the USA.

"L. D. 50" was praised by critics for its technique and heaviness. The band themselves call this style math metal. For the album, they experimented with weird, dissonant sounds; a sound collage that was put together especially for the album and used as an interlude.

"L. D. 50" was produced by Garth "GGGarth" Richardson and SLIPKNOT member Shawn "Clown" Crahan. The year after its release, the album reached #1 on the Billboard Top Heatseeker chart and #85 on the Billboard Top 200. The singles "Dig " and "Death Blooms" reached #33 and #32 on the mainstream charts.
