From 1955, the year in which he became famous with Miles Davis' first "great quintet", the legendary tenor saxophonist John Coltrane (1926-1967) only recorded with one guitarist: the extremely versatile Kenny Burrell (born 1931). In March 1958, together with the outstanding rhythm section of pianist (and Burrell's fellow Detroit native) Tommy Flanagan, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb (the latter two were Coltrane's colleagues in Miles Davis' sextet at the time), the two recorded the five tracks included on New Jazz.
