Sublime is an American band from Long Beach, California, that plays a mixture of ska, punk and reggae. The band was founded in 1988 and its original line-up consisted of Bradley Nowell (vocals and guitar), Eric Wilson (bass) and Bud Gaugh (drums). Lou Dog, Nowell's Dalmatian, was the band's mascot. Nowell died of a heroin overdose in 1996, after which the band broke up.
Every young, developing band has a demo tape. That one demo that helps them succeed. The tape that somehow ends up in the hands of a producer and is immediately recognized as pure genius. For Sublime, that demo tape was called "Jah Won't Pay the Bills". Luckily for them, "Jah" would soon pay their bills.
Sublime was the first band to mix rock and reggae elements in their music. It was a unique sound at the time and obviously opened the eyes of the record companies. Listen to the opening track "DJs", for example. The drums and bass throughout the track are pure talent leading to a catchy chorus.
