On these four haunting, extended pieces, time is stopped by this brilliant guitarist with the help of an all-star cast. Unique in Green's discography for its relaxed, lengthy performances and almost dreamlike lyricism, this blue-note classic could well be called "Ballads for the Ages".
The Penguin Jazz Guide: "Probably Green's best record. Bobby Hutcherson's involvement was the clincher. Green's solos shine lyrically with clean and precisely placed notes."
Fifteen minutes long is the opening number from Grant Green's great 1963 album "Idle Moments." A year earlier, Green, who was known for his nimble single-note playing, had been named a rising star on guitar by DownBeat critics.
Despite the title, Green and his fellow musicians don't allow themselves an idle moment in this quarter of an hour. As the piece unfolds, all the unique colors of the ensemble reveal themselves: from Grant Green's sensitive guitar and Duke Pearson's elegant piano to Joe Henderson's sumptuous tenor sax and Bobby Hutcherson's crystalline vibraphone to Bob Cranshaw's soothing upright bass and Al Harewood's subtle drumming.
