With his weightless and airy tone, Gerry Mulligan revolutionized the image of the baritone saxophone in the cool jazz era and thus contributed significantly to its emancipation as a solo instrument. Before Mulligan founded his Concert Jazz Band in 1960, he recorded a series of very popular albums in which other great saxophonists such as Lee Konitz, Stan Getz, Paul Desmond and Johnny Hodges were his "sparring" partners. A special historic meeting took place in 1959 with the legendary swing tenor Ben Webster. For the US radio station NPR, it is "a classic album by two giants" that should not be missing from any jazz collection.
