From The Lions Mouth (2024 Reissue) (Orange Vinyl) [LP]

For The Sound's second album, From The Lions Mouth, the band decided to work with producer Hugh Jones (Echo & The Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, Bauhaus). The result was a more layered album than the debut, combining the band's atmospheric, affecting sound with a series of accessible but invigorating songs. At the time, the album received high marks from the British music press, but failed to raise the band's profile beyond their loyal fan base.

Today it is considered a post-punk classic. From The Lions Mouth, a relatively restrained but vital follow-up to Jeopardy, proved that The Sound's critical status among the post-punk elite was no accident. A bigger recording budget allowed the band to explore and create a fuller, more cohesive sound, while Adrian Borland's lyrics became even more introspective (a startling turnaround after the often political thrust of Jeopardy).

However despairing the singer's words may be, the tone, as the original NME review of the album points out, never lapsed into "pessimistic wallowing". Tracks like "Sense Of Purpose" and "Contact The Fact" still have an infectious urgency, highlighting the tension between Borland's bleak worldview and his knack for hooks.

The dark nature of the lyrics on From The Lions Mouth are the first real signs of Adrian Borland's volatile nature. While he fought a tragically losing battle with depression for the rest of his life, it's hard not to see this album as an enduring and fascinating document of the beginnings of madness.
