Still proudly wearing their original roots in thrash metal and screamo on their sleeves, the band has steadily evolved their sound, incorporating euphoric elements of post-rock and shoegaze to spectacular effect. "Eunoia", a word used to describe the mutual goodwill between a speaker and his audience, takes this dichotomy of calm and chaos and distills it even further, truly showing the band in their element, both on stage and in the studio.
The album consists only of songs that the band can and will play on stage. It was written around the idea of looking for hope and inspiration in everyday life while feeling powerless against the weight of the world. The lead single "Beyond the Raindrops" was one of the first songs written for the project, but was only recorded at the last minute. The epic halftime groove and soaring, resonant guitars are as melancholy as they are grand, and Tetsu's heartfelt lyrics were written in the moment as an honest response to the song's haunting melody. In other tracks like "Whiteout," Envy's frenetic origins are channeled with a pounding drum solo that introduces staccato post-hardcore guitar work and vocals that veer wildly between guttural roars and an onslaught of spoken words.
Opening track "Imagination and Creation" is described by Envy as "a step forward into the future, using the past as nourishment". Blastbeat drums and screeching guitars propel a defiant and infectiously hopeful vocal melody into the unknown, as a band with such a storied past learns to appreciate the now in preparation for what happens next. 'Eunoia', Envy's eighth album, is truly a landmark; the perfect balance of aggression and exhilaration in which the band's revitalized lineup explores a latent sense of powerlessness in the face of a fractured and increasingly divided world.
