With his unmistakable, incredibly elegant phrasing on the alto saxophone, Johnny Hodges was - with only a brief interruption in the early 1950s - one of the defining voices of the Duke Ellington Orchestra from 1928 until his death in 1970.

They proved that their musical complicity also worked excellently on a small scale during a casual jam session for Verve in 1959, during which some of the recordings for the album "Side By Side" were made.
