Small impulse, big effect - this is what the term "butterfly effect" stands for. Even the flap of a butterfly's wings at one point on earth can trigger a chain of events that result in huge changes in a faraway place. In the case of the duo of saxophonist, flautist and clarinettist Magnus Lindgren and pianist John Beasley, the starting point for this chain of events is the smallest possible format of musical interaction: the duo
The eleven original compositions and an arrangement of the Beatles classic "Come Together" create small musical worlds that Lindgren and Beasley explore and shape together. You could also call this real-time arranging, the acceleration of art for which Lindgren and Beasley have been world-famous for years. Both are among the most important and sought-after arrangers in jazz and popular music and their first joint album "Bird Lives" was awarded a GRAMMY and nominated a further three times
As with "Bird Lives", the appeal of "Butterfly Effect" lies in the diverse perspectives of its protagonists. Magnus Lindgren, at home in Sweden, draws on the depth of European classical music, the freedom of jazz and the emotionality of soul and pop. The American John Beasley combines the imaginative power of his own film and TV soundtracks with the experience of working with stars such as Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Steely Dan and Dianne Reeves and an impressive background of big band arrangements and compositions
"Butterfly Effect" seems like a distillate of all these influences. At the same time, the album shows a completely different side to Lindgren and Beasley, beyond their work with large orchestras and big bands. You can hear the joy they take in the lightness and spontaneity of the small line-up - a joy that is immediately transferred to the listener.
