The music for "1917" was composed by Thomas Newman (The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, Road to Perdition).
Newman has already received 14 Oscar nominations throughout his career, and this new epic composition has already been nominated for an Oscar and the Hollywood Critics Association Award.
As the film is designed to be told in a single shot by cinematographer Roger Deakins, Newman's pulsating score often serves as a unique form of editing. The music stops during dramatic parts, rises during battle scenes and, in one breathtaking moment, becomes almost operatic as MacKay runs through war ruins to escape enemy fire.
The film was directed by Sam Mendes, who wrote the screenplay for "1917" with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Showtime's Penny Dreadful).
